The main objective that each team has to achieve in the game of basketball is to score as many points as possible. At the same time, the team would also want to reduce the amount of points that the opponent manages to steal from them. With this in mind, development of both team offense and defense is very crucial for any team that desires to rule the court.

Being well versed with many offensive strategies is the best preparation that a coach can equip his players with. During game day, the ability of his players to play various offensive strategies will confuse the opponent. This will subsequently increase the teams’ likelihood of winning.

The goal of a team offense is to create open shots for members of the team. Offensive team strategies require top level of teamwork to be a success. The coach must convince his players to play as one during the game. In a team offensive, the ball is usually passed around until someone finally manages to shake off a defender and take a clear shot.

However, unless you’re up against an inferior team, these clear shots do not come easily. In fact, intricate moves and strategies should be planned and executed to achieve this. Some of the popular offensive team strategy categories are press offense, man to man offense, zone offense and also transition offense. We will briefly look at the some popular strategies under each of these categories.

Press offense is used to counter pressure defense. There are basically two categories of press offense attacks. The first one is a freelance attack where players move around towards open spots. The second category of press offense is control pressed attacks. The coach should decide which attack methodology should be practiced by the team based on the capabilities of its players.

Among the most famous man to man offensive strategies are the Wheel Offense, the High Post Offense, and the Wyoming Weave Offense. For this category, we will look specifically at the Wheel Offense. The benefit of the Wheel Offense is the versatility that it offers when facing a multitude of defense configurations from the opponent.

When the opponent plays zone defense, it has to be met with zone offense. The main objective of zone offense is to distort the configuration of the defense zone. Once this is achieved, attacking players will have better chances at clear shots. Experts reckon that this type of offense is usually more suited for high school teams than college and professional teams. The benefit of this offense approach is that players do not have to make long passes and long shots. However, in college teams, players are already strong enough to shoot and pass farther out. This explains such an opinion.

Transition offense is also known as fast break offense. Fast break is great as it places constant pressure on defenders and will eventually wear them down. Also, this type of offensive is really popular with the fans due to its high speed nature. In terms of motivation, this type of offense gives every team member an equal chance to score. In addition to this, playing fast break offense will reduce the number of opponent players waiting to take a rebound. This is because they know that they will have to get back to defend fast.

There are many offensive team strategies that coaches can look at for their team. When considering strategies, coaches must consider the ability and physical condition of their player. A well planned offense strategy will help in many ways to get your team to win.

The essential equipment required depends completely on the league in which you are playing, and if it is a competitive league, versus a simple recreation league. The requirements change depending on the purpose, and seriousness of the league as rules, and players will vary.

Both leagues require a regulation size basketball. For a women’s league the ball is slightly smaller in size. Men’s basketball’s are approximately 1 inch larger in diameter.

Along with the ball you will need two hoops that are the right height, and proper distance apart. The court will be set according with appropriate markings on it and the nets will have a very specific place in which they will be.

This is the absolutely basic equipment necessary, now onto the personal equipment.

Each team will have a seat of jerseys and colors. Professional Leagues will have jerseys that are designed by professionals, and are stunning, where house and local leagues will traditionally have jerseys that are frequently similar as they take the logos from professional leagues and just replace the home city name. You will also wear basketball shorts that usually come down around the knees and match the jersey or at least coordinate with it.

One of the most important parts to a uniform for a basketball player is the shoes. Basketball players pride themselves on having the very best shoes out there. They can provide for sharp turns and good grip when launching to get the ball with the right treads. Buying cheaper gym shoes that won’t last very well can and will affect your quality of play eventually. The biggest investment that a basketball player will have to make will be the shoes. Some players also choose to have jockstraps as a means of protecting themselves during a game. The protection just assists the player in ensuring his or her safety with that additional layer that it provides that would otherwise be left wide open.

A lot of people may right off the bat ask what the purpose of arranging a parent meeting in a youth league serves. People automatically assume that youth league means fun, and means that there should be no organization or no formality to it.

That is incorrect, meetings with parents allow a coach to get to know the parents and vice versa. It allows a coach to get insight on their potential player, and the support system behind that player, and allows parents to get a look into the plans that the coach has for the team. Sometimes parents may not like certain plans, and sometimes their fears will be put aside because this one on one time provides the perfect chance to get everyone on the same page.

This interaction also allows for information exchanges that benefit everyone involved. It can give coaches new ideas, parents may end up volunteering to help the team, and also allows both parties to get their chickens in a row and get everything out there so there are no unpleasant surprises. Some youth teams are run harder and more professionally then others, and some are run for fun and recreation. This meeting can establish where on that scale the team fits, and if it fits with the potential player.

The meetings will go well so long as the purpose of them is kept in mind, while some socializing is in order; you have to realize that gossiping is not in order. Trying to jockey your child a better position by bad mouthing another person can end up hurting your own child in the end. These meetings serve as both meet and greet, and informational. They are meant to not only get the information out there, but to exchange it, to bounce ideas around, and at the end of the meetings, allow the coach to come out with a better overall picture of his team, and a better overall picture of his players and their families.

A coach will be able to tell from these meetings if certain parents may be “trouble makers” or may be the “super fans” that can sometimes push their children too far. As much as a coach is responsible for his players, sometimes a coach may have to talk to the parents in a same manner as a player to ensure that corrections are made. It sounds a little silly, but in today’s age of competition it is completely true.

Arranging the meeting is something that both parties are responsible for, but before the start of the season, a coach should have made the effort to meet with all of the parents, and should ensure that parents know he or she is available at any time for discussion of any positive feedback or concerns and will be happy to address them and even give them status reports of their kids. Some parents are very hands on, and some just like to know their child is being taken care of.

Another aspect of basketball that occasionally goes unnoticed is the nutritional aspect. Some players will forget that anything they put into their bodies can short term or long term affect them. If you eat too much of the wrong items you can negatively affect not only your game play, but even your overall health. That is why it is absolutely important and crucial to be aware at all times of what is going into your body, and to make sure that you know the signs and signals that your body gives off if something is wrong.

Starting with nutritional supplements, know what you are getting yourself into. A lot of athletes will find themselves taking questionable substances without knowing just because they are trying to get better. If you are going to put something in your body, make sure that you know what it is. If you wish to start using a supplement, research it online, and ask not only nutritional store staff, but even health care professionals. Make sure that what you are looking to intake is in fact going to benefit you and not harm you in the long run.

Fast food is another hazard. While fast food is a quick fix when you`re hungry, and will tide you over until the next meal time, it is also going to fill your system with junk that has no real nutritional value. Fast food is enjoyable and in moderation is absolutely fine, but some people will become reliant on it because of its convenience and forget its lack of nutrition.

While a lot of people will pitch perfect diets and claim they have the secret to unlocking your bodies potential, moderation is the secret you need. No one knows your body better then you do, and you know what you can eat, and what you cannot eat. Common sense is all you really need when eating, you know if something is good for you or isn`t good for you, and if you are unsure, then don`t eat it until you`ve done some research and consulted the proper people.

This also comes down to drugs and anything that can artificially enhance your performance. While the benefits seem worth it now, down the road the side effects and downfalls can and will hit you hard. Just read up online about some of the cases of people taking steroids and other enhancers, and see how they are health wise now. While the advantages are tempting in such a competitive age, it’s definitely not worth it.

Getting into your own personal habit is a good thing, and getting advice from knowledgeable nutritional experts is an asset, just never fall into the fad diets and never fall for these get results quick schemes. There are plenty of normal ways to have an excellent diet that will provide you with all the essential vitamins and balance that will keep your energy high and your body in great shape!

A lot of people concentrate on offense and defence and forget one of the most critical points of the game that often gets overlooked as actually being crucial, and that is the free throws. Free throws are one of the only parts of the game that is completely controlled by the player making the shot. No one else can interfere and no one else can influence the shot. This means that the shooter has complete control, and if that shooter hasn`t practiced those shots or has under estimated their importance; you may find that some points that your team could be racking up, will be lost.

One tip that a lot of players, and even some coaches overlook is simple repetitive practice. Doing the same shot over and over again, while your coach is watching you to help you with small pointers and potential adjustments that can up your successful shooting percentage. This method doesn`t work with every single player, but should be integrated occasionally into all training regimes to ensure that players all have minimal amounts of free throw practice.

Players also have to learn to deal with the actual mental side of the shot as well. The crowd will be cheering loudly and proudly, your teammates will be shouting encouragement, and your opponents may simply try to distract you.

Whatever the case is you have to learn to ignore all these outsides factors and concentrate solely on the shot before you. While there is no exact way to measure the physical and the mental side to each shot, there is simply the ability to state that a successful free throw shooter has mastered both aspects or learned to adapt and control them. If this means having to practice on a crowded street and learned to deal with noise and distractions, then that`s what has to be done. If it means practicing in a quiet gym, then so be it. Either way coach and player will have to work together to decide the best ways, which come on a player by player basis. No two players on a team are EVER the same. What works for one player, may not work for another.

What is important is developing a free throw routine or “ritual”. Developing this will get you into a “zone” that will help you concentrate and block out your distractions and focus on the goal at hand.

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, and could be as simple as kissing the ball before you shoot it, or a single dribble. Either way you need to find a way to be able to put yourself in the concentration zone that will be required to maximize your potential success and minimize the failure.

In the end, one main thing stands out and that is practice. Free throws WILL NOT improve overnight, and they certain won’t improve without work. You need to be at it day in and day out, and constantly working hard to improve. Saying you want to improve is a start, doing something about it is a whole new ball game.
