Preparing for the next Basketball Season

In one week time from now, schools are closing for the summer holidays here in Germany. This will be same time when the gyms are closing and the practices will stop for the next couple of weeks. It’s this time of the year where coaches and players alike take a short break and find time to rest their bodies and minds.

As coach I always feel relieved when this time of season comes. It gives me time to think about the past 7 or 8 months. What went well, what needs improvement? How can I organise myself better and how can I improve things within my organisation?

Basketball can be very frustrating. You do not get to experience success all the time. The game wherein you are struggling to play in is the most annoying part, especially when you get calls. Believe it or not, I have gone through this one. I guess any player or coach who has undergone this situation can relate to this. You get so tired of getting your rhythm back in the game, and you feel that you are not doing anything right at all. When you try to exert the effort, you get a call. That is really upsetting for any player and coach. Situations like this can drive the player to be unkind to referees. They get mad at referees to the point of talking inappropriate words to them.

Portraits of top NCAA Coaches: Billy Donovan

Billy Donovan was Nicknamed ‘Billy the Kid’ by Petino while he played at Providence. Donovan blossomed under a young coach just off a stint with the New Jersey Nets: Rick Pitino. While playing under Pitino the Friars flourished and Donovan averaged 15 points per game as a junior and 20 as a senior. During Donovan’s senior season, the Friars would go to the Final Four.

After graduating with a degree in general social studies, Donovan was drafted by the Utah Jazz in the third round of the 1987 NBA Draft. After being waived by the Jazz, Donovan went to the Wyoming Wildcatters of the CBA and then played for short stint alongside his college coach Rick Pitino with the New York Knicks.

Thoughts on your Coaching Philosophy

It is quite difficult to tackle things about philosophy. It requires a deeper sense of understanding in order to conceptualize what philosophy is all about. Before you even begin to formulate your coaching philosophy, try to consider and answer the following questions: Why are you coaching? What type of coach do you want to become? And who are you going to coach? These are relevant questions that will guide you and help you develop your own coaching philosophy. Coaching embraces a very huge responsibility to yourself, to the staff, and to your players.
