These are the topics for »Weekly Roundup #10«:

  • Review: Coachdeck Basketball Drills
This is my first review out of a series of Basketball products for coaches and players alike. During my years of coaching I have gathered a lot of useful coaching equipment I’d like to tell you about. If you’d like me to review a product or if you have a suggestions, I’d be happy if you get in touch with me!
  • Are you superstitious? What’s your jersey number?
What’s with the jersey number you might wonder, and why do players hold on to superstition? Superstition with numbers comes with any game, and you can’t leave basketball players far behind in this. The power of numbers is not known, but is somehow limitless. In the glamorous sport of basketball, referees, coaches, players, fans etc are all superstitious about jersey numbers. Infact, in most cases the player’s jersey numbers have become synonymous with the player’s themselves.
  • Thoughts on Post Game Talks
The other weekend we lost a close game, and my girls were down a little. I was too, but I didn’t want to show it at first, because I needed some time to pass and think about why we had lost. Thinking of how to cheer the girls up without putting fingers in wounds, I came up with a couple of thoughts on a Post Game Talk.
  • Leading your aspiring Youth Coaches
In competitive leagues, as well as recreational leagues, aspiring coaches play a vital role when it comes to assisting the whole club to reach the overall goals. These can be winning a tournament, or even teaching the fundamentals to basketball starters. Although there are a lot of things to be taught, the first thing I would recommend when trying to inspire youth coaches is to instill passion. Youth coaches, no matter what game they are coaching, must be passionate about the game. If you are passionate it makes things much easier when working hard while achieving the set goals for the basketball team.
  • Basketball Idols: A Portrait of Earvin Magic Johnson
Born Earvin Johnson on August 14, 1959 in Lansing, Michigan, it seemed that “Magic” had to be his name since that’s what he exuberated on and off court. An amazing personality and player, he is also one of the most inspirational players of our time. His famous quote which says, “Everybody on a championship team doesn’t get publicity, but everyone can say he’s a champion” has proved to be very inspiring for those wanting to make it big in this sport. He is truly a unique player who changed and catapulted the sport of basketball to heights that it had never reached before, with just his skills.
  • Winning and Losing with Class
While it is fun to strut your stuff when you win, there is a line that you come to where the celebration can be excessive. The same comes on the flipside of that coin, if you lose the game, you can’t just sulk around and hide. Sore losers and sore winners can often tarnish what otherwise was a hard fought, excellent contest. This is an issue and needs to be addressed even before games so that players cannot claim they didn’t know they might have crossed some lines. It is easy to get caught up in the moment, but takes real class to know the true limits.

  • Preparing kids for their first Game
Dealing with youths is slightly different then dealing with a professional lot of players. Youths are fresh to the game, and while they are still competitive, they are more playing the game to make friends, be with friends, or because it’s something to do. Very rarely are youth in a league to take their team to the championship, or to go undefeated. They are there to blow off steam and have fun. Coaches need to nurture this while teaching the basics of the game without attempting to force the competitive side of the game.
