Today I’ll be having a look at the Basketball Trivia iPhone app developed by the guys from Appiction. With this iPhone app you have close to 1,500 Basketball facts from College Basketball (NCAA), Professional Basketball (NBA) and Miscellaneous categories at hand to boast with. Now, let’s have a closer look at this app:
Basketball Trivia has a simple and sleek design. The color of the menu is brownish/dark red. The main background looks like an actual maple colored gym floor, which I (being a total basketball nut) really liked a lot.
Once you start the app, there are different things you can do. A random fact is shown in the middle of the iPhone’s screen. In the upper left corner there is a search field where you can enter keywords for specific facts. If you enter the desired keywords the search function returns the total number of results, eg. the keyword ‘gym’ returned two results, and a corresponding list with matching facts. When you tap on the listed item, the fact item is displayed.
In the top right corner you have three buttons. The first button, shown as two outlining half-circles with a big dot in the middle, let’s you share the displayed fact via E-Mail or copy it to your iPhone’s clipboard for use in other apps. This makes it easy to send facts via text message, for example.
The second button, three vertically aligned stars with horizontal lines, activates your list of favourite facts which you’ve added manually, and, once tapped, it displays the full-text fact. The third button and the last in the upper area let’s you add the active fact item to your favorites list.
In the lower left part of the screen you have the ‘Options’ menu. In the options menu you can set filters for displaying the facts. There are three available categories which can be activated/deactivated to limit the fact items to a specific group.
If you’d like to change the color of how the facts are displayed, you can adjust it in the ‘Color Settings’ options panel. You can adjust the colors of the background and the text easily by either using the horizontal or by dragging the little white spot around until you find your desired color. If you mess up, then there’s a ‘Reset’ button to, well, reset the default colors.
There are two more buttons in the options menu: ‘Restart Facts at #1’ does exactly what it says. If you’ve scrolled yourself far enough through the fact database, this is an easy option to go back to the beginning. ‘Erase Favourites List’ clears your favourite lists. Use this with caution.

To get further information about the app’s technicals and the developers you can click the ‘About’ button, which is located in the ‘Options’ menu at the bottom.
On the main screen and the lower right part you have two small buttons: The first button, two crossing arrows, displays a random fact. The second button, a miniature numbered list, brings you back to Fact #1.
What I like:
- Facts, Facts, Facts: So much trivia that basically everyone, fans & professionals, can find something interesting to talk about.
- Sleek design without any distractions
- Easily send it to your peeps
- I’m a visual dude, so if technically and legally possible, please add pictures to the trivia. This would be a great addition.
The guys from Appiction have created a simple and neat application. Especially those interested in historical and current basketball facts will greatly enjoy Basketball Trivia. If you are a youth coach, present your players with a daily fact in the sports they most love and keep them motivated. The developers announced that they will soon be adding the most recent information on 2010 NBA and NCAA!
